Skinwalkers
April 17th 2009 00:49
Werewolves exist, but they call themselves Skinwalkers. There are two tribes: Those that view their werewolf aspect as a gift, and those that view it as a curse. There is a native American legend that says a special child will be born, and at midnight on his 13th birthday he will somehow stop the Skinwalkers for good. The skinwalkers will know the child is coming because 4 days before his 13th birthday the moon will turn blood red.
That is the premise for this mediocre werewolf movie. The production value is generally fairly slick, and the action scenes are decent. That being said, let me pose a question:
Q: Why do we go to see Werewolf movies?
A: To see werewolves tear the freaking shit out of everything that moves!
That is where this movie falls down. They have set out to make an action movie with lots of werewolves instead of a werewolf movie with lots of action. In fact, there is almost no gore in the movie. It could just be that the last werewolf movie i saw was the awesome Dog Soldiers, but this movie just fell so far short of what I was expecting.
Overall, I'd say give this one a miss. If you're after werewolves, go for Dog Soldiers, or maybe Ginger Snaps. Hell, go rent Underworld, that has more gore than this. The creature costumes are pretty good, but that's about the best thing in the movie.
SPOILER! If you plan on watching this movie, stop reading now or I'll spoil the (predictable) twist.
I only really rented this movie because it starred Rhona Mitra (Dommsday, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans). I find it quite ironic that this girly's problems in both underworld and this come because she falls in love with a werewolf. LEARN YOUR LESSON, WOMAN!
