Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud
May 21st 2009 02:11
Premise: 2 families, the (snooty) McCoys and the (redneck) Hatfields, have been at war for a years, following a car accident that left one of the Hatfields crippled. However, a Romeo & Juliet-esque love affair between Ricky McCoy (Bradley Taylor) and Jodie Hatfield (Amy Manson) has developed in secret.
When the pair are discovered by 2 of the Hatfield brothers, Ricky's beloved sister is accidentally killed while trying to escape. Torn by grief and realizing their love will never be permitted as long as the Hatfields are around, Ricky travels deep into the woods to a Witch's house, and summons Pumpkinhead to take his revenge.
Now, this movie was made by the sci-fi channel back to back with Pumpkinhead 3 (Ashes to Ashes). I actually thought I was getting Ashes to Ashes because my local video store decided to put the wrong cover on the movie. As a TV/straight-to-video movie, I didn't really have high expectation, so I wasn't overly disappointed.
First, the highlights. Lance Henriksen reprises his role as Ed Harley, albeit in ghost form.. and he is convincing (as always). I was also impressed by the female lead's acting chops, and she basically carried the movie (seeing as Henriksen had such a small role). The movie also avoided the usual low-budget-tv-movie-awful-CGI trap by relying solely on creature-costumes. While this made Pumpkinhead a little boring after a while, it is still preferable to laughable CGI. The costume itself was also pretty cool. Some of the splatter effects were also quite entertaining.
Flaws: Some of the acting is grating and annoying. The movie is, well... formulaic. Entirely predictable. Also, I can't quite pinpoint why, but I found the character of the witch to be really annoying, but it wasn't too bad because she doesn't have much screen time.
Also, I have a question... how large are redneck families in the states? I found the sheer number of Hatfields there to be slaughtered a little unrealistic, but I have never seen a Southern family gathering so there you go.
Overall... not a bad effort for a straight-to-TV movie. Definitely not the pinnacle of cinema, not by a long shot, and I wouldn't go out of my way to find it, but worth a look if you stumble on it on TV while bored.
