Movie Review: War of the Dead
June 17th 2009 05:13
Premise: A trio of nazi soldier zombies is hunting down the members of the platoon that killed them, and it's up to a member of an x-files-like government agency to stop them.
I'm going to get right down to business: this movie is terrible. Just terrible. Everything about it is bad. Let's go through a checklist.
Acting: Some of the worst I have ever seen. Normally I am quite forgiving of bad acting, but this is where the buck stops. I would be surprised if anyone that has a part in this movie even took drama classes. For instance, a 'blind' old man looking people in the eye and commenting on their clothes. Or the old man who just lost his grandson trying to act grief-stricken... laughable, really. There is not one convincing performance in the whole movie.
Script: Woeful. More hole than plot, really. The dialogue ranges from corny to just retarded, and contemplating the inconsistencies is enough to numb the mind. For instance, they are trying to ride the whole zombie-virus wave, but still saying that they are undead? Apparently, zombies can be taken down by hitting any major blood vessel or organ... even though they are undead. Oh and my personal favourite: it's a zombie virus, zombies are just people too (sic), but these three zombies can only be killed by WWII vintage weapons... for absolutely no reason at all. Yeah, convincing stuff.
Effects: It's like the script-writer and the effects guy were having a competition on who can suck more. The script put in a strong performance, but hats off to the victor: The effects team. Literally, I was astounded at how bad the effects were. You could tell who was a zombie, because of all the face paint. Oh, and every single wound looked like one of those fake-wounds that you can buy at supermarkets around Halloween time. Not the ones you get in a costume store, oh no. These are the super-tight-budget el cheapo ones. Nice work, guys. Really.
Now, I am the first to say this: I could be totally missing the point. Sometimes, horror-parody goes straight over my head. I have a sinful truth to confess: the first time I watched Return of the Living Dead, I hated it. Hated it with a passion. It went completely over my head. It wasn't until someone pointed out the (obvious) truth about the nature of the film, and from then on it has been one of my favourite of the genre. I have been getting better with practice at spotting these rare gems, but sometimes despised movies turn out to be hidden gems. And I tried so hard to take this movie as a zombified tongue-in-cheek, i really did.... But I couldn't. The movie just seems to take itself way too seriously to be a comedy. I have to admit, at parts the awfulness of it all is quite amusing, but it's just not enough to make this movie worth your attention.
Overall: Perhaps, if low-quality films is what tickles your twisted fancy. Otherwise, avoid this one at all costs.
