Krispy Kreme Donuts
August 26th 2006 04:35
These donuts have been out in Sydney for some time now but the first store opened in Melbourne a couple of months ago, the store in Narre Warren features a 24 hour drive through service that is apparently a specialty for only Sydney and Melbourne. The donut itself was fantastic, but only for the first half. I'm not the biggest sweets man on the planet and by the time I got about half way I was struggling, the amount of fat that must be injected into that donut was phenomenal. By the time I had finished it I felt so sick and even had to wait 30 minutes in the store just to let my stomach settle so that I could drive again.
The first day that the store opened I was listening to the radio and there was a talk back segment on that had listeners call up about the stupid things they had done. One guy called up and said that he had decided to get a krispy kreme on the way to walk through the drive through, he then proceeded to state that he had been waiting for 3 hours.
The popularity of the donuts is amazing, rather voluptuous housewives in floral dresses were buying boxes of these donuts at a time, I overheard a lady say that she had driven all the way from Coburg to Narre Warren, one of the store locations (a very solid drive) just to buy these donuts. That then got me thinking, why would the corporation not open stores elsewhere? The popularity surely justifies the need for more stores, or at least closer to the city. I asked around and apparently no council wants to have the obesity factory in their jurisdiction. Fair enough

These days, I pass the shops, and most of them are pretty desolate, and those doughnuts look pretty lonely.
I don't think Australian tastes match American ones. Perhaps Australians go for less-obviously-fattening food (though I've heard it said we're more obese than Americans), or maybe less sweet foods, or maybe more variety, or maybe just less obviously American brands. But I wouldn't be surprised if Krispy Kremes lost the Donut King vs Krispy Kreme rumble.

Go for an original flavour. Get it warm (preferably freshly made). Otherwise, heat it up for 10 seconds in a microwave.
Commonly described as "It's like I'm eating a cloud."

So when you finally do have one, make sure to abandon your expectations before you do.

NOTHING like those crappy 7/11 chunks of month old iced bagel. So light, so not sickly (unless you have more than two or three at one go)
My mate and I went to Sydney last year for the basketball finals and I bought the 2 dozen special when we arrived at Sydney airport. He challenged me to eat a whole box (mixed dozen - some plain/some others) before the game that night, about 3 hours later. I did it. Then on the way back through the airport the next day, I bought another two dozen. And no Im not a fat bastard, just a gluttonous one. These doughnuts will open your eyes to what a real doughnut is compared to the rest of the heavy rubbish we have been eating or the last 30 years.

I know what you mean tho... it's really all hype. I think us Aussies were just SO excited to see what these Americans were on about and then the fact that you had to queue just outside your house in Manly when the first store opened up in Penrith helped give them sort of celebrity-like appeal. Only to realise that if you eat the whole thing, you're condemning yourself to a lifetime of gym visits and soup diets.
Over-rated I say!
Btw only just ate one cos I got a 50c voucher for the new tropical ones and since that's a fifth of the price, I couldnt say no!
